Is Identity something to protect and preserve, or does it push us to seek recognition beyond ourselves? The New Bedford Art Museum presents The Shape of Who We Are: Exploring Identity, a juried exhibition of works investigating origins, extinction, tradition, and transformation—a reflection of who we are and who we may become. Works may be any medium. The Shape of Who We Are is the second annual call for art of the New Bedford Art Museum's annual juried exhibition series and is open to artists internationally. ABOUT THE JUROR Marcelle Joseph is an American independent curator and collector based in the United Kingdom. Since 2011, Joseph has produced and curated over 50 exhibitions in the UK and the rest of Europe, featuring the work of over 300 international artists. Joseph holds an MA in Art History with Distinction from Birkbeck, University of London with a specialization in feminist art practice. Her curatorial work focuses on gender and the performative construction of identity. Joseph is the Vice Chair of the Board of Trustees of Mimosa House in London and an Ambassador of the Royal Academy Schools in London. Radical Reinvention: Contemporary Ceramic Sculpture presents the work of artists who have redefined the possibilities of ceramics as a medium for sculpture. The exhibition showcases works that push the boundaries of material, form, and cultural interpretation and highlights the cross-over of ceramics from the worlds of utility and craft into the mainstream of contemporary art. The exhibition features innovative pieces influenced by ceramic practice and bodies of knowledge from diverse cultures—Ancient Egypt, Greece and Portugal—while incorporating contemporary sensibilities, themes, and ideas. Publicly displayed for the first time, the Edward Yasuna white-line woodcut collection offers an opportunity to view the evolution of a uniquely American innovation, the white-line woodcut print. Based on traditional Japanese woodblock printing, the white-line technique is a form of relief printmaking developed on Cape Cod at the beginning of the 20th century. The collection contains examples of some of the earliest examples of the genre by Blanche Lazzell, one of the founding members of the Provincetown Printers, and spans to present-day practitioners including local artist, Peter Michael Martin.
