About our Guest Speaker:
Stephen Engelberg was the founding managing editor of ProPublica from 2008 to 2012 and became editor-in-chief in 2013. Prior to that, he served as managing editor at The Oregonian and spent 18 years at The New York Times, with assignments in New York, Washington, D.C., and Warsaw, Poland. Engelberg was a member of the Pulitzer Prize Board from 2012 to 2021.

His career has centered on investigative journalism. At the Times, he started the investigative unit in 2000, overseeing Pulitzer Prize-winning coverage on Mexican corruption and the rise of Al Qaeda. While at The Oregonian, he led teams recognized for their work on breaking news, methamphetamine abuse, and charity fraud. He is also the co-author of Germs: Biological Weapons and America’s Secret War (2001).
