The New Bedford Historical Society seeks to establish a solid base of research and programs that will make the contributions of people of color a part of the life and history of the region as well as a part of the permanent, public record. They are committed to preserving and celebrating the contributions of African American, Cape Verdeans, Native Americans, West Indians, and other people of color in the city’s rich history. One of their notable contributions if the preservation of the Nathan and Polly Johnson House, a key site on the Underground Railroad and First Home of Frederick Douglass.
