Art tells a story and brings people together to share stories that become a part of the fabric of a community. In New Bedford, we recognize the vital role the arts play in individual and collective growth and development. Watch Mass Humanities’ video below to see local artists utilize their creative expression to advocate for continued support for artistic spaces and programs. This video was taken during the Creative Sector Advocacy Day sponsored by MASSCreative.
Interdisciplinary artist and educator Mwalim Peters notes, “When it comes to education, intellectual development, and social development of individuals, the arts play a key role… art is a part of what allows us to fully develop as people.” You can find Peters in New Bedford playing at various venues and events with his Grammy-award winning band, The GroovaLottos, and leading jazz culture workshops that take the form of educational jam sessions, fostering growth through active communal artistic engagement.
This June 2025, Mass Humanities celebrates the connection between art and storytelling and its power to activate change by kicking off a new event series. New Bedford, a city full of artists with unique stories, hosts the premiere event at the New Bedford Whaling Museum: All Hands on Deck- A Climate Story Summit. They will present the Massachusetts Storyteller Award to the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe, represented by David Weeden. Weeden’s work uses storytelling to convey the urgency of climate action. Enjoy this evening of storytelling and hear live music by Mwalim Peters! RSVP HERE.
