SUMMARY:Forging Independence | Building a Nation
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution\, NBWM will open a new suite of conjoined galleries in that explore stories of independence\, struggle\, and citizenship in the region during the late colonial and early Republican period (1760-1830). \nForging Independence | Building a Nation introduces connections between historical events and pressing issues of today\, asking visitors to consider what ideas are embodied in the terms and ideas of Independence and Nationhood. Words like patriotism\, freedom\, taxation\, citizenship\, liberty\, equality\, justice\, tolerance\, and independence serve as keystones within the installation to encourage thoughtful engagement with concepts that transcend the past and directly connect with our present. Associations forged between objects\, concepts\, and individuals broach insightful civic-minded questions about what it means to be “American.” What did colonial citizens think America should or would be\, and how do we today continue to ask those questions and shape that outcome today?

SUMMARY:Proteanna: Susan Heideman
DESCRIPTION:Artist Susan Heideman (b. 1950) has explored bio-morphic shapes of the ocean’s “in-between entities” for nearly twenty years in her Proteanna series and beyond. The real and imagined floating\, aqueous shapes of her work evoke the forms of invertebrate creatures that often remind us of primordial beings living in the depths of the sea. \nThe colorful hand embroidered large scale works that define the Proteanna series are “hybrid” in nature and include a mix of older works combined with newer paintings and constructions. The texture and layering create an almost three-dimensional experience that transport the visitor into a wondrous underwater world of possibility. \nArtist Statement: \nIn 2006 the Proteanna Series began with an experiment. For the first time\, using black embroidery thread\, I tried stitching imagery into an existing watercolor I’d always felt lacking. The piece seemed to come alive. Suddenly the idea of combining stitching\, watercolor and other aqueous media on larger sheets of thick watercolor paper had become entrancing. I began tearing up random\, ragged fragments of my old monotypes and stitching them onto the paper. I continued stitching\, painting\, and layering\, attaching collaged pieces strictly through stitching. This was the beginning of the ongoing Proteanna Series. I coined the word “proteanna\,” derived from the word “protean\,” to suggest entities and their situations straddling and crossing taxonomies\, mutating beyond classification. The process is as improvisatory as nature; forms develop\, morph\, and reconstitute. Fragments get sewn atop fragments\, creating relief surfaces that stratify. Might my grafting and hybridizing processes be likened to nature’s own irrepressibly continuous transforming? \nBio: \nHeideman is a Smith College Professor Emerita who taught painting and drawing within Smith’s Art Department for thirty-six years. During that time\, she maintained her studio practice in Boston; she continues to work and live in Boston since retiring. She has works in the following permanent collections: Smith College Museum (several pieces); \nDanforth Museum of Art at Framingham State University; Rose Art Museum of Brandeis University; Boston College’s McMullen Museum of Art; DeCordova Museum and Sculpture Park; Boston Public Library Collection of Prints and Drawings (multiple pieces); and The William and Uytendal Collection of Works by Women Artists at Bryn Mawr College. Her works are also represented in numerous corporate collections. She has shown up and down the East Coast and New York City in commercial galleries\, non-profit galleries\, and museums.

SUMMARY:Creative Catalysts Exhibition: Call for Art
DESCRIPTION:Through visual art\, literary arts\, music\, and multi-media the exhibition will use a lens of literature to to “see” new perspectives. \nCross-Pollinate with Us! \nCreative Catalysts displays the amazing interplay of unique pairings and perspectives from artists working in a broad assortment of artistic mediums. Our theme this year – the lens of literature – asks artist pairs to choose a work of literature and shape work resulting from its inherent questions and search for answers. \nThe exhibition will take place at GroundWork Gallery Saturday\, October 3rd – Sunday\, November 29. \nCreative Catalysts presents how viewpoints and creative work transform when connected to a wide pool of inspiration. How does your work change through collaboration? Is that change obvious to others? How will you reflect on the experience when it is over? \nEach artist contributes their own work to the exhibit\, displayed visually in a shared space with the partner’s work. Prior to creating the individual works\, the partner pair chooses a piece of literature – of any genre – to reference as source\, inspiration\, or framework. Then chat and meet with your partner over the course of the summer and early fall to brainstorm and share creative process ideas. Inspire each other through conversation and ideas from your book\, story\, poem\, or play! \nRegister for the show either solo – and we’ll help find you a partner – or as a team (though each individual artist should still register\, indicating they are part of a team). Both June 9th and July 14th Artists Share!\, which meets the 2nd Tuesday of each month\, will have special brainstorming\, creative exercises\, and project discussion to help you find partners if you need one and/or talk out where your new work might go. \nYou can review last year’s Creative Catalysts digital exhibition at Midoricreativity.com! \nRegister by reserving a ticket and completing the form that you will receive via email upon registration. Both steps must be completed in order to be considered for the exhibition. DESCRIPTION:The New Bedford Art Museum presents Synergies: Hybrid Art\, a juried exhibition of 19 artists working in all media. This exhibition highlights work that merges artistic disciplines\, materials\, and technologies to create innovative forms of expression. The exhibition is juried by Amy Lemaire & Nicolas Touron\, an artist duo based in Brooklyn\, NY\, whose collaborative practice explores materiality\, form\, and the intersection of natural and constructed environments. Working across diverse media\, their work bridges the disciplines of sculpture\, glass\, and installation\, creating immersive visual narratives that challenge perception and engage the senses. \nJUROR’S STATEMENT \nSynergies: Hybrid Art brings together artists whose works operate through combination\, transformation\, and emergence. As collaborating artists and jurors\, we were consistently drawn to practices that move beyond fixed categories—works existing between disciplines\, materials\, technologies\, and ways of thinking. What emerged through the jurying process was not simply a survey of contemporary making\, but a portrait of artists actively redefining artistic boundaries. \nTo us\, synergy suggests more than interdisciplinarity. It describes the moment when separate elements converge to create something newly alive—something that could not exist independently. Across the exhibition\, materials\, ideas\, processes\, and traditions intersect in unexpected ways: hand skills merge with digital technologies; craft intersects with conceptual inquiry; physical materials interact with virtual environments; and diverse visual languages coexist within new systems of meaning and production. \nMany of the selected artists work at the edges of established disciplines\, where categories become permeable and new forms emerge through experimentation\, hybridity\, and exchange. Rather than functioning as oppositions\, dualities—human and technological\, material and virtual\, local and global— generate new possibilities for imagination\, inquiry\, and critical reflection. \nThe exhibition reflects a contemporary moment defined by accelerated technological change\, ecological awareness\, and the constant recombination of information\, histories\, and forms. Artists are uniquely positioned within this landscape\, not only responding to change but envisioning new relationships between systems\, materials\, and futures. SUMMARY:Sailors' Valentines: Maritime Art from the Heart
DESCRIPTION:Shellwork mosaics\, known as sailor’s valentines\, consist of colorful shells in intricate arrangements housed in octagonal wooden boxes. Created primarily between 1830 and 1890\, their designs incorporate hearts\, flowers\, and nautical symbols like anchors and compass roses. Sometimes they carry romantic messages written out in tiny shells. \nDespite their name\, sailor’s valentines were not made by sailors at sea. Instead\, they were produced for the tourist trade by Barbadian women from locally sourced shells. In the 1800s\, Barbados\, located at the easternmost part of the Caribbean\, was a center of maritime supply and distribution. US ships often stopped at the small island\, where sailors purchased keepsakes\, like valentines\, for loved ones at home. This cottage industry for locally made goods provided crucial economic opportunities for women of a color under British colonial occupation. The Slavery Abolition Act came into effect in Barbados in 1834\, and previously enslaved Barbadians needed work. While Barbadian men traveled and labored off island\, women provided for their families. Shellwork craft production was a lifeline. \nThe popularity of sailor’s valentines emerged concurrent with the rise of a new scientific discipline – conchology\, or the study of shells\, the popular pastime of amateur shell collecting\, and the domestication of the seaside for tourism. Common shells in sailor’s valentines include Barbados keyhole limpets\, purple sea snails\, King Venus clams\, cockles\, and colorful small cowries. Shells could evoke a personal trip to the beach\, a voyage further afield\, scientific interest\, or international knowledge. While some shells were souvenirs\, serious shell collectors could order shells from around the world expanding their collection to be truly comprehensive. As with other forms of scientific collecting\, the demand for shells and shellwork did contribute to the decline of certain species of mollusks. \nIn the 1900s\, American women adopted shellwork as a form of artistic expression. Collector and artist Evelyn Way Kendall (1893-1979) summered in Marion\, MA starting in 1926 and made numerous sailor’s valentines\, two of which are on view in the exhibition. Between 1977 and 1982\, Cape Cod folk artists Ralph Cahoon (1910-1982)\, Martha Cahoon (1905-1999) and Bernard “Bernie” Woodman (1920-1986) further developed this artistic tradition. They created dozens of delicate and charming sailor’s valentines\, combining Bernie’s beautiful shellwork with Ralph and Martha’s whimsical\, nautical fantasy paintings. Seven are included. Contemporary maker Sandi Blanda (b. 1959) follows a traditional format\, while artist Duke Riley (b. 1972) creates oversize vividly colored compositions from plastic trash collected on East coast beaches. Informed by maritime folk arts and the sailor’s valentine\, Riley’s work educates audiences about environmental pollution and marine debris. \nThis exhibition was organized\, in part\, by the Cahoon Museum of American Art\, where it was curated by Leeann Ream \nIt is supported by the William M. Wood Foundation\, Dave and Marilyn Ferkinhoff\, and the Boston Marine Society

Born and raised in Tehran\, and currently completing her MFA at UMass Dartmouth\, Shahi bridges traditional craft with contemporary conceptual art. The exhibition explores the deeply personal and collective landscapes of memory\, identity\, and displacement. Moving seamlessly between photography\, papermaking\, and intricate weaving\, Shahi utilizes delicate\, translucent materials that interact with light and shadow to evoke a sense of both profound strength and fragile impermanence. Featuring collaborative elements created alongside the local community during her residency workshops\, “Unforgotten” offers a striking visual meditation on the emotional traces we carry across time and borders. DESCRIPTION:About The Program\nThis summer\, the New Bedford Art Museum invites young artists to take part in an 8 week creative experience designed for exploration\, skill building\, and artistic discovery. \nMakers Playground: Summer Art Program is structured as eight individual weekly sessions\, each available for separate enrollment. Families can register for one week or multiple weeks\, with each session offering a unique theme and experience. \nStudents will explore drawing\, painting\, mixed media\, digital illustration\, and clay while engaging directly with the Museum’s exhibitions and the surrounding arts community. iPads are provided so students can learn and create using Procreate alongside traditional materials. \nEach week includes a guided walking field trip to a local cultural or historic site where students sketch\, observe\, and collect inspiration from real world environments. These experiences will include visits to nearby museums\, galleries\, public art\, libraries\, waterfront spaces\, and historic landmarks such as the New Bedford Glass Museum and the Rotch-Jones-Duff House & Garden Museum. \nWalking field trips and observational exercises encourage students to think like artists by observing\, analyzing\, and responding to the world around them. \nClay will be offered as a rotating feature across select weeks depending on studio availability. \nBy the end of each week\, students will have completed multiple finished pieces\, explored new materials and techniques\, and strengthened their creative confidence in a supportive and engaging environment.

The exhibition examines artistic responses to the Anthropocene\, a period characterized by the irreversible impact of human activity on the planet\, and considers potential futures that may arise as a result. \nThrough immersive and materially innovative works\, Vanishing Ecologies addresses climate change\, mass extinction\, environmental toxicity\, and the enduring legacy of the atomic age. The exhibition examines the increasingly complex relationships among technology\, ecology\, and time. Some artists investigate the fragile boundary between collapse and adaptation\, while others envision post-human futures\, ecological resilience\, and planetary memory. \nThroughout the exhibition\, artists translate ecological questions into experiences that are simultaneously material\, emotional\, and speculative. DESCRIPTION:Drawing from a live model has been an important part of many formal artistic practices since the Renaissance. Our open figure drawing studio is intended to provide artists of all levels a relaxed environment and a dedicated space where they are able to continue the tradition of working from a live nude model. \nSessions are three hours long\, and will start with a series of short gestures and ranging from 5-10 minutes before moving into longer 30 minute poses. Each class typically concludes with an hour long pose. \nThere will be no formal instruction during the class; artists are encouraged to work from the model independently\, in any medium they wish to bring.

That historic moment echoed far beyond the Old State House\, traveling along the Commonwealth’s ports\, wharves\, and maritime communities that were already shaping the course of resistance and independence. \nLiberty Declared commemorates this pivotal July 18 tradition by bringing the words of the Declaration to life in New Bedford—a port city whose ships\, sailors\, merchants\, and maritime industries were deeply intertwined with the Revolutionary cause. Central to that story is the Dartmouth\, a vessel built in this region and forever linked to the Boston Tea Party\, symbolizing how Massachusetts’ maritime economy helped ignite a revolution. \nPresented at the New Bedford Whaling Museum and in conversation with the exhibition Forging Independence: Building a Nation\, this program invites visitors of all ages to engage with the Declaration not only as a historic document\, but as a living expression of liberty\, resistance\, and civic responsibility. These ideals resonated along New Bedford’s waterfront in 1776 and continue to shape public life today. \nThrough a community reading\, activities\, and opportunities for reflection\, participants will explore how the ideals proclaimed on July 18 influenced the creation of the United States and continue to challenge each generation to consider the meaning of freedom\, protest\, representation\, and participation in a democracy. \nWhat to Expect (Free with Museum Admission) \n11:30 AM – Gather & Go\nGather beneath the whale skeletons in the Jacobs Family Gallery and join a procession led by fife and drum musicians to the Cook Memorial Theater for a welcome and opening remarks. \n12:00 PM – Community Reading of the Declaration of Independence\nIn the Cook Memorial Theater\, local residents\, families\, students\, and community leaders participate in a shared reading of the Declaration of Independence\, honoring the tradition of its first public proclamation in Massachusetts on July 18\, 1776. \nExplore & Discover (Self-Guided)\nMaritime Connections to Independence: Discover how vessels such as the Dartmouth and the region’s merchant and whaling fleets contributed to the events that led to American independence. \nCivic Reflection: Consider the meaning of liberty then and now by adding your thoughts\, questions\, or commitments to a community reflection scroll. \nExplore Museum Galleries: Engage with Forging Independence: Building a Nation and related exhibitions that place New Bedford within the broader story of America’s founding. \nThe above portion of the program is family-friendly and included with museum admission. Blending history\, place\, and participation\, Liberty Declared honors July 18 as a defining Massachusetts moment and celebrates New Bedford’s role in the currents of independence that helped shape a nation. \n2:00–3:00 PM – Liberty Declared Tea Reception (Ticketed: $12.50 Members | $25 General Public)\nContinue the celebration with live music and light refreshments inspired by the late eighteenth century. DESCRIPTION:NB Roots and Branches is excited to welcome Iman Dias to the Explore Servedwell Hospitality stage at Celia’s Boutique for our 2026 Festival! \nEmanuel\, also known as Iman among the Cape Verdean community\, is a native of S. Vincent\, one of the most productive islands of Cape Verde. He was born Nov. 9\, 1967. His interest in music started at a very early age\, due to the fact that his entire family of two sisters and four brothers and his mother were already in the music field. Iman’s very first performance was in an elementary catholic school Salezyano. \nAs his dream to be a professional singer grew\, so did the opportunity to perform with some of the most recognized singers known worldwide such as CESARIA EVORA. – It also lead to the forming of his first professional group known as Gotinha d’ Aga which allowed him to perform in the biggest festival in Cape Verde known as Festival De Baia das Gatas which opened new avenues for him to go on to win the competition at Todo Mundo Canta “All the World\nSings” in August 1987. \nNB Roots and Branches is a two-day acoustic music and art festival “by and for the people” taking place annually on the 3rd week of July. The festival is 100% free to all and devoted to ensuring the various diverse communities of Greater New Bedford are represented on both the performance schedule and in the audience. It aims to have a positive impact on downtown New Bedford’s social\, cultural\, and business communities.
