SUMMARY:Forging Independence | Building a Nation
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution\, NBWM will open a new suite of conjoined galleries in that explore stories of independence\, struggle\, and citizenship in the region during the late colonial and early Republican period (1760-1830). \nForging Independence | Building a Nation introduces connections between historical events and pressing issues of today\, asking visitors to consider what ideas are embodied in the terms and ideas of Independence and Nationhood. Words like patriotism\, freedom\, taxation\, citizenship\, liberty\, equality\, justice\, tolerance\, and independence serve as keystones within the installation to encourage thoughtful engagement with concepts that transcend the past and directly connect with our present. Associations forged between objects\, concepts\, and individuals broach insightful civic-minded questions about what it means to be “American.” What did colonial citizens think America should or would be\, and how do we today continue to ask those questions and shape that outcome today?

SUMMARY:Proteanna: Susan Heideman
DESCRIPTION:Artist Susan Heideman (b. 1950) has explored bio-morphic shapes of the ocean’s “in-between entities” for nearly twenty years in her Proteanna series and beyond. The real and imagined floating\, aqueous shapes of her work evoke the forms of invertebrate creatures that often remind us of primordial beings living in the depths of the sea. \nThe colorful hand embroidered large scale works that define the Proteanna series are “hybrid” in nature and include a mix of older works combined with newer paintings and constructions. The texture and layering create an almost three-dimensional experience that transport the visitor into a wondrous underwater world of possibility. \nArtist Statement: \nIn 2006 the Proteanna Series began with an experiment. For the first time\, using black embroidery thread\, I tried stitching imagery into an existing watercolor I’d always felt lacking. The piece seemed to come alive. Suddenly the idea of combining stitching\, watercolor and other aqueous media on larger sheets of thick watercolor paper had become entrancing. I began tearing up random\, ragged fragments of my old monotypes and stitching them onto the paper. I continued stitching\, painting\, and layering\, attaching collaged pieces strictly through stitching. This was the beginning of the ongoing Proteanna Series. I coined the word “proteanna\,” derived from the word “protean\,” to suggest entities and their situations straddling and crossing taxonomies\, mutating beyond classification. The process is as improvisatory as nature; forms develop\, morph\, and reconstitute. Fragments get sewn atop fragments\, creating relief surfaces that stratify. Might my grafting and hybridizing processes be likened to nature’s own irrepressibly continuous transforming? \nBio: \nHeideman is a Smith College Professor Emerita who taught painting and drawing within Smith’s Art Department for thirty-six years. During that time\, she maintained her studio practice in Boston; she continues to work and live in Boston since retiring. She has works in the following permanent collections: Smith College Museum (several pieces); \nDanforth Museum of Art at Framingham State University; Rose Art Museum of Brandeis University; Boston College’s McMullen Museum of Art; DeCordova Museum and Sculpture Park; Boston Public Library Collection of Prints and Drawings (multiple pieces); and The William and Uytendal Collection of Works by Women Artists at Bryn Mawr College. Her works are also represented in numerous corporate collections. She has shown up and down the East Coast and New York City in commercial galleries\, non-profit galleries\, and museums.

SUMMARY:Sailors' Valentines: Maritime Art from the Heart
DESCRIPTION:Shellwork mosaics\, known as sailor’s valentines\, consist of colorful shells in intricate arrangements housed in octagonal wooden boxes. Created primarily between 1830 and 1890\, their designs incorporate hearts\, flowers\, and nautical symbols like anchors and compass roses. Sometimes they carry romantic messages written out in tiny shells. \nDespite their name\, sailor’s valentines were not made by sailors at sea. Instead\, they were produced for the tourist trade by Barbadian women from locally sourced shells. In the 1800s\, Barbados\, located at the easternmost part of the Caribbean\, was a center of maritime supply and distribution. US ships often stopped at the small island\, where sailors purchased keepsakes\, like valentines\, for loved ones at home. This cottage industry for locally made goods provided crucial economic opportunities for women of a color under British colonial occupation. The Slavery Abolition Act came into effect in Barbados in 1834\, and previously enslaved Barbadians needed work. While Barbadian men traveled and labored off island\, women provided for their families. Shellwork craft production was a lifeline. \nThe popularity of sailor’s valentines emerged concurrent with the rise of a new scientific discipline – conchology\, or the study of shells\, the popular pastime of amateur shell collecting\, and the domestication of the seaside for tourism. Common shells in sailor’s valentines include Barbados keyhole limpets\, purple sea snails\, King Venus clams\, cockles\, and colorful small cowries. Shells could evoke a personal trip to the beach\, a voyage further afield\, scientific interest\, or international knowledge. While some shells were souvenirs\, serious shell collectors could order shells from around the world expanding their collection to be truly comprehensive. As with other forms of scientific collecting\, the demand for shells and shellwork did contribute to the decline of certain species of mollusks. \nIn the 1900s\, American women adopted shellwork as a form of artistic expression. Collector and artist Evelyn Way Kendall (1893-1979) summered in Marion\, MA starting in 1926 and made numerous sailor’s valentines\, two of which are on view in the exhibition. Between 1977 and 1982\, Cape Cod folk artists Ralph Cahoon (1910-1982)\, Martha Cahoon (1905-1999) and Bernard “Bernie” Woodman (1920-1986) further developed this artistic tradition. They created dozens of delicate and charming sailor’s valentines\, combining Bernie’s beautiful shellwork with Ralph and Martha’s whimsical\, nautical fantasy paintings. Seven are included. Contemporary maker Sandi Blanda (b. 1959) follows a traditional format\, while artist Duke Riley (b. 1972) creates oversize vividly colored compositions from plastic trash collected on East coast beaches. Informed by maritime folk arts and the sailor’s valentine\, Riley’s work educates audiences about environmental pollution and marine debris. \nThis exhibition was organized\, in part\, by the Cahoon Museum of American Art\, where it was curated by Leeann Ream \nIt is supported by the William M. Wood Foundation\, Dave and Marilyn Ferkinhoff\, and the Boston Marine Society

SUMMARY:Vanishing Ecologies: Speculative Futures
DESCRIPTION:Vanishing Ecologies: Speculative Futures\nJUNE 25 – OCTOBER 11\, 2026 \nVanishing Ecologies: Speculative Futures brings together an international group of contemporary artists working across sculpture\, installation\, painting\, photography\, sound\, and time-based media. The exhibition examines artistic responses to the Anthropocene\, a period characterized by the irreversible impact of human activity on the planet\, and considers potential futures that may arise as a result. \nThrough immersive and materially innovative works\, Vanishing Ecologies addresses climate change\, mass extinction\, environmental toxicity\, and the enduring legacy of the atomic age. The exhibition examines the increasingly complex relationships among technology\, ecology\, and time. Some artists investigate the fragile boundary between collapse and adaptation\, while others envision post-human futures\, ecological resilience\, and planetary memory. \nThroughout the exhibition\, artists translate ecological questions into experiences that are simultaneously material\, emotional\, and speculative. Representations of extinct species\, consumer waste\, fragile glass forms\, contaminated landscapes\, organic growth\, and imagined future artifacts serve as frameworks for considering a planet in transition. These works navigate the intersection of scientific inquiry and artistic invention\, tracing the intricate relationships among human activity\, technological systems\, and the living world. Rather than solely documenting environmental crises\, Vanishing Ecologies investigates how art can expand the capacity for imagination. The exhibition encourages viewers to reflect on memory\, resilience\, and deep time\, while contemplating futures that remain uncertain\, interconnected\, and evolving. \nThe exhibition features works by Rachel Berwick\, Thomas Deininger\, Beth Lipman\, Aimée Lamaire\, Minga Opazo\, Rachel Ostrow\, Anaïs Tondeur\, and Nicolas Touron.

SUMMARY:CALL FOR ARTISTS: Analog: An Antidote to AI Art
DESCRIPTION:Call for Artists\nENTRY DEADLINE: 9/24/26\nCASH PRIZES: $1000 First Place | $500 Second Place \nIn an era shaped by artificial intelligence\, Analog: An Antidote to AI Art celebrates the enduring power of human imagination\, intuition\, and authentic artistic expression. This exhibition invites artists whose work reflects the distinctly human experience of making\, embracing experimentation\, imperfection\, memory\, materiality\, and lived experience. Rather than rejecting technology\, Analog asks a timely question: What makes art unmistakably human? We welcome original work in all visual art media and genres\, including painting\, sculpture\, ceramics\, printmaking\, textiles\, fiber\, photography\, installation\, mixed media\, assemblage\, drawing\, book arts\, jewelry\, sound art\, olfactive art\, biophilic practices\, and other forms that demonstrate personal vision and meaningful engagement with materials and process. \nAs AI-generated imagery becomes ubiquitous\, Analog turns our attention to what algorithms cannot replicate: intuition\, vulnerability\, touch\, chance\, personal history\, and the countless decisions embedded in the creative process. The exhibition celebrates originality as an expression of curiosity\, resilience\, and the uniquely human impulse to make meaning from the world around us. We seek work that reveals touch\, struggle\, experimentation\, art that reflects the imperfect\, unpredictable\, and deeply personal nature of human creation. \nABOUT THE JUROR \nRoddy Schrock is a sound artist and institution-builder who has spent his career on a single question: what does it actually take to build the conditions under which transformative work can exist\, and endure? Trained at Mills College (MFA in Electronic Music and Recording Media) and the Institute of Sonology in The Hague\, he has performed across Japan\, Europe\, South America\, and the United States\, with commissions from Meet the Composer and Ostrava New Music Days and essays published by MIT Press and Hyperallergic. For a decade he directed Eyebeam\, New York’s center for art and technology\, where he grew direct support to artists more than 500%\, made it the first residency certified by W.A.G.E. for fair pay\, and supported the launch of the Eyebeam Center for the Future of Journalism\, whose commissions garnered a Pulitzer Prize–winning investigation. He has taught in SVA’s Curatorial Practice MA program and at STEIM Amsterdam\, CCA\, and NYU’s ITP\, and created Informer\, a podcast of conversations with artists and thinkers. Now Executive Director of the New York Zen Center for Contemplative Care\, he also runs Ultradilute\, a practice tending the whole health of artists and creative leaders\, and advises OPEN and the Netherlands-America Foundation’s Cultural Committee. He lives and works between New York and Providence\, Rhode Island.

SUMMARY:What Remains\, a solo exhibition by Dilge Dilsiz\, artist-in-residence
DESCRIPTION:What Remains is Dilge Dilsiz’s solo exhibition created during her artist residency at New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park\, located at the Visitor Center at 33 William Street\, New Bedford\, MA 02740. \nVisitor Center hours are Wednesday – Sunday: 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM (Monday and Tuesday: Closed). Please check park hours at https://www.nps.gov/nebe or call (508) 996-4095. The Visitor Center is free. Upon entering\, ask the front desk where the exhibition is located. \nAbout the Exhibition\nThis new body of work considers what happens when a contemporary body encounters the physical residues of New Bedford’s rich history. Through long-exposure photography and immersive light installation\, Dilsiz explores belonging\, memory\, and how a landscape holds history long after the bodies that shaped it are gone. \nMoving through four distinct key sites—the working waterfront\, Fort Taber\, former textile mills\, and the hurricane barrier—the collection traces New Bedford’s evolution across land\, water\, labor\, and history. \nWithin the photographs\, long exposures allow figures to dissolve into net\, stone\, brick\, and water—blurring the line where the body ends and the landscape begins. Inside the gallery\, lantern light and metallic prints respond directly to the viewer’s movement\, referencing New Bedford’s legacy as “the city that lit the world” through whale oil illumination. \nAbout the Artist\nDilge Dilsiz is a Turkish interdisciplinary artist based in Cincinnati\, Ohio\, and an Assistant Professor of Graphic + Experience Design at Miami University. Working across photography\, installation\, performance\, poetry\, design\, and new media\, her collaborative practice examines identity\, memory\, and belonging. She holds an MFA from Stony Brook University and dual bachelor’s degrees in Studio Art and Psychology (minor in Architectural Studies) from Lafayette College. Her work has been exhibited across the United States and Europe\, supported by residencies including Live Art Ireland and the New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park.

SUMMARY:Hand Building with Clay: Beyond the Wheel
DESCRIPTION:This four-week hand-building ceramics class is designed as a perfect companion to wheel throwing and an excellent alternative for those looking to explore a completely different side of working with clay. \nWhile wheel throwing is more streamlined and technical\, hand building is slower\, more organic\, and highly expressive. In this class\, students will work entirely without the wheel\, learning a whole new set of skills that emphasize form\, texture\, surface design\, and sculptural freedom. \nParticipants will create functional items such as mugs and plates\, while also exploring molds and hand-sculpted forms that cannot be made on the wheel. Hand building allows for more detailed surfaces\, decorative elements\, and experimental shapes\, making it ideal for artists who enjoy a more tactile\, flexible\, and creative process. \nThis class is especially well suited for beginners\, as hand building offers an approachable entry point into ceramics. It is also a great next step for wheel throwers who want to expand their skill set and gain a deeper understanding of clay as a material. \nClass Dates: Mondays\, August 17\, 24\, 31 & September 7) \nAll necessary materials are provided for this hands-on experience.

SUMMARY:SnapLab: Photography Studio Sessions
DESCRIPTION:SnapLab: Photography Studio Sessions is a four-week\, hands-on photography course for teens and adults who want to get confident behind a camera — any camera. This is a shooting-first course: every session puts a camera in your hands\, whether you’re practicing the exposure triangle at hands-on stations\, hunting compositions on a guided photo walk through downtown New Bedford\, or working with studio lighting at the Museum. \nSkills build week to week — exposure\, composition\, lighting\, and editing — and short group shares at the end of each session help you learn to see what’s working in your own photos. The course wraps with a final shooting challenge and a casual gallery-style showcase of each participant’s best work from the month. \nNo experience needed. SnapLab is designed to teach photography skills and to grow a creative community where local photographers can connect\, collaborate\, and build confidence together. \nWhat to Bring \nAny camera participants are comfortable using — DSLR\, mirrorless\, or smartphone. \nProgram Goals\nProgram Goals \nSession 1: The Exposure Triangle\, Hands-On After a short introduction to aperture\, shutter speed\, and ISO\, participants move straight into shooting stations — freezing and blurring motion\, controlling depth of field\, and working in low light. The session ends with a quick group share\, building a habit of looking at and talking about photographs from day one. \nSession 2: Composition on the Street-A brief primer on framing — leading lines\, layers\, negative space — followed by a guided photo walk through downtown New Bedford with structured shooting assignments designed to sharpen the eye. Participants return to share one favorite frame from the walk. \nSession 3: Studio Light-A studio night at the Museum: portraits and still life under controlled lighting\, where participants actively adjust exposure as the light changes. The session closes with a live group edit of one image\, introducing accessible editing tools by demonstration. \nSession 4: The Shootout & Showcase-The course finishes the way it ran — shooting. Participants take on a themed photo challenge applying everything from weeks 1–3\, then select their best images from the full month for a casual gallery-style showing to celebrate the work and the community built along the way. \nNote: film photography is not covered in this program \nInstructor: Philip Mondeau \nPhilip Mondeau is a New Bedford–based digital visual artist who blends surrealism and street photography to reveal the divine in the everyday mundane. A self-taught fine arts photographer who got his start shooting sports for his college newspaper\, he now creates work for individual collectors and has exhibited in galleries and publications across multiple states. His background includes darkroom film processing and studio fashion photography. Through SnapLab\, Philip hopes to build a creative community of local photographers.

SUMMARY:Ranger Choice Tour: 🌍 Discover New Bedford: A City of Adventure and Freedom! 🚢
DESCRIPTION:Join Ranger Erin for an illuminating journey into the industry that transformed New Bedford into a global powerhouse—the city that fueled economies\, powered homes\, and shaped history. \nFor decades\, New Bedford was the epicenter of the whaling industry\, producing the most sought-after commodity of its time: whale oil. The whaling economy attracted people from all backgrounds—sailors\, merchants\, abolitionists\, and refugees—each finding their place in a town driven by ambition and resilience. \nStep into history. SUMMARY:COME JOIN THE CHORUS! Greater New Bedford Choral Society Open Rehearsals Begin September 9th\, 2026
DESCRIPTION:Experience the joy of singing with GNBCS–everyone is welcome–no auditions necessary! Attend an open rehearsal to find out what it’s like to sing with us on Wednesday\, September 9\, 16\, or 23 at 6:30pm. \nGNBCS is a non-audition SATB choir under the direction of Brian Dean Sousa. Open rehearsals on September 9\, 16\, and 23 allow new members to experience singing with GNBCS and decide if they wish to continue. We rehearse Wednesday nights from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm at First Unitarian Church in New Bedford. \nOur holiday concert\, “Christmas Songs from Around the World\,” is planned for Sunday\, December 6th at 3:30 pm. Originally a pagan holiday\, Christmas was adopted by the Romans as the date of Christ’s birth in the 4th century and is now celebrated in more than 160 countries. The GNBCS concert will explore a variety of different musical styles and ideas\, and will include selections from 11 different countries in a multitude of languages! \nGNBCS has been bringing classical choral music to listeners in southeastern Massachusetts since its founding in 1964. We are a four-part chorus with members from surrounding communities including Westport\, Dartmouth\, Acushnet\, Lakeville\, New Bedford\, and Fairhaven. \nWe present one winter concert in either December or January\, and another in the spring. Our concerts typically include one major choral work plus a selection of shorter pieces chosen for the season of the year and are performed in area churches. We have combined with the New Bedford Symphony\, the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Chorus\, and other area choral societies to perform larger works. \nVisit our website at https://www.gnbcs.org/ for more information and to register or follow us on Facebook.

SUMMARY:REEL TALK: FILM CLASS - Wilding
DESCRIPTION:Stories and Their Humans: Tales of an Anthropocenic World\nAs scientists (and politicians) debate the veracity of the Anthropocene\, an age of human centered activity that\, if declared a new epoch\, will forever alter the chemical composition of the rocks and fossils beneath our feet\, the climate changes\, animals disappear\, and shorelines advance. Regardless of nomenclature\, the planet is shifting. Smart money says it’s the humans with their cars and coal mines. \nThe films of this series present vivid\, imaginative\, nature centered imagery to explore a human centered world that is harrowing\, but also surprising; Maybe just maybe even hopeful…. \nWILDING (David Allen\, 2023; 75 min) \n“We can save our world if we want to” is not just a platitude in WILDING (David Allen\, 2024). The film documents the true transformation of an English country estate allowed to run wild\, entrusting the farmland’s future to a motley mix of animals both tame and wild. The “avant garden” conservation project is no less than miraculous\, returning fauna and flora to a land once drenched in chemicals and sadness.

SUMMARY:Underground Railroad Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:Join Park Volunteer Bob for an immersive Underground Railroad Walking Tour\, where you’ll uncover the hidden stories of those who defied oppression and carved a new future for themselves. \nThe Underground Railroad—a courageous network of people from all walks of life—was a lifeline for enslaved individuals seeking liberty. Guided by resilience and hope\, they journeyed to safe havens from Philadelphia to Canada\, breaking the chains of bondage and reclaiming their right to determine their own lives. \nNew Bedford stood as a beacon of promise\, a city where the whaling industry provided refuge and opportunity for formerly enslaved people. SUMMARY:ArtTALK: Thomas Deininger
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an ArtTALK with Rhode Island based artist\, Thomas Deininger\, featured in Vanishing Ecologies: Speculative Futures.\nAbout Thomas Deininger \nThomas Deininger (b.1970) is a critically acclaimed Rhode Island artist that combines his love for the natural world and environmental concerns with his passion for painting and sculpture by constructing found object assemblages that address issues of mass consumerism and the disposable materials that we use briefly and cast aside. His work engages the viewer by highlighting a poetic resourcefulness and explores the potential that lies in the mundane. Deininger also admits that is serves as a healthy solution to his pack rat tendencies and hunter-gatherer impulses that he has not been able to evolve past. His work can be found in public and private collections through out the world.
