SUMMARY:Forging Independence | Building a Nation
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution\, NBWM will open a new suite of conjoined galleries in that explore stories of independence\, struggle\, and citizenship in the region during the late colonial and early Republican period (1760-1830). \nForging Independence | Building a Nation introduces connections between historical events and pressing issues of today\, asking visitors to consider what ideas are embodied in the terms and ideas of Independence and Nationhood. Words like patriotism\, freedom\, taxation\, citizenship\, liberty\, equality\, justice\, tolerance\, and independence serve as keystones within the installation to encourage thoughtful engagement with concepts that transcend the past and directly connect with our present. Associations forged between objects\, concepts\, and individuals broach insightful civic-minded questions about what it means to be “American.” What did colonial citizens think America should or would be\, and how do we today continue to ask those questions and shape that outcome today?

SUMMARY:Ahab's Head: American Vengeance
DESCRIPTION:In Ahab’s Head: American Vengeance\, a new installation work created for the New Bedford Whaling Museum\, Whitman seeks to capture Ahab’s madness and the ominous feeling of dread and inevitable violence that pervades the novel. In this work\, Whitman encourages visitors to reflect on how these themes are also mirrored in American society. Hanging sculptural forms made from rope and fabric cast shadows on wall-drawn charts depicting fictitious whaling voyages. Two giant assemblages\, one inspired by Ahab and Moby-Dick and the other of the destruction of the ship\, the Pequod. Together with a newly created soundscape and weaponry from the Museum collection\, Ahab’s Head will place visitors at the center of Ahab’s obsession and offer a meditation on violence in the world of Moby-Dick and beyond.

SUMMARY:Resistance: Cultural and Political Narratives in Mexican Art
DESCRIPTION:The exhibition features works by contemporary Mexican artists whose practices primarily engage questions of freedom of expression\, history\, and social justice and serve as public channels of dissent. Through sculpture\, installation\, performance-based documentation\, textiles\, and printmaking\, the exhibition considers how artists reflect on Indigenous knowledge\, collective memory\, and contemporary social contexts. \nThe exhibition includes work by Jacobo and María Ángeles\, master Oaxacan wood carvers\, best known for their sculptural interpretations of tonas and nahuales—vivid\, fantastical wooden sculptures that blend imagination\, folklore\, and cultural symbolism\, drawing on Zapotec cosmologies. Their works stand as both cultural continuity and political assertion in the face of erasure. \nThe exhibition also features work by Adela Goldbard\, whose practice centers on collective memory\, power\, and the ways history is constructed\, erased\, or ritualized—often through acts that are both symbolic and materially destructive—and prints\nby Mario Guzmán\, who utilizes graphic art as a tool for social engagement with a strong emphasis on community\,\nlabor\, and political struggle\, alongside members of Subterráneos\, a collective he leads in Oaxaca\, rooted in socially engaged printmaking traditions that address political and community-based concerns. \nRenata Cassiano Alvarez presents sculptures from her ongoing series Siempre Voy a Volver (“I Will Always Return”)\, alongside related works that reflect on memory\, migration\, and the emotional pull of home. Using intimate materials and hand-built processes\, Alvarez creates sculptural forms marked by touch\, wear\, and repetition. The works suggest bodies\, vessels\, and domestic gestures without resolving into literal representation\, allowing absence and longing to remain central to their meaning.

SUMMARY:NBSO Presents “The Human Element”
DESCRIPTION:This concert is a celebration of transformation—of sound\, of spirit\, and of the boundless possibilities in music that dares to cross borders. \nWe begin with Missy Mazzoli’s River Rouge Transfiguration—a vivid\, pulsing soundscape inspired by Detroit’s industrial heart. It’s a musical metamorphosis\, where steel and smoke give way to shimmering light and unexpected beauty. \nNext\, we dive into the rich\, emotional landscapes of Brahms’ Symphony No. 3—a masterpiece of tenderness and passion. From its noble opening to its yearning finale\, Brahms invites us into a world where strength and vulnerability exist in perfect harmony. \nFinally\, Dominican-born jazz and classical powerhouse Michel Camilo brings electrifying charisma to the stage with his Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No. 1. Blending Afro-Caribbean rhythms\, jazz spontaneity\, and classical grandeur\, Camilo’s concerto is a thrilling ride—bold\, joyful\, and utterly alive. And the slow movement will stir your soul. \nFeel the rush. Be transformed. Let the music take over.

SUMMARY:SPRING VACATION ART PROGRAM
DESCRIPTION:This April Vacation\, give your young artist a full week of creativity\, exploration\, and hands-on discovery. Spring Into Creativity blends traditional artmaking\, digital design\, ceramics\, and city-wide exploration into one dynamic experience.\nStudents will create artwork inspired by spring and the vibrant arts community of New Bedford while experimenting with drawing\, painting\, mixed media\, clay\, and digital illustration. The Museum provides iPads so participants can learn how to use Procreate\, turning their research and ideas into polished digital artwork alongside their traditional projects.\nInteractive scavenger hunts in the Museum and local library will challenge students to observe\, analyze\, and collect inspiration like real artists. What they discover will directly fuel their art projects throughout the week transforming patterns\, textures\, and imagery into original creations.\nParticipants will also enjoy walking field trips to nearby cultural institutions\, expanding their understanding of local art and history.\nTuesday and Thursday feature a special Pottery Takeover\, where students work in the Museum’s ceramics studio to learn handbuilding and wheel throwing techniques and create spring-themed clay pieces using professional tools and materials.\nBy the end of the week\, students will have explored multiple mediums\, learned new technical skills (including digital illustration on iPads)\, created finished artwork they’re proud of\, and experienced the arts community of New Bedford in an immersive\, engaging way.

SUMMARY:Hand Building with Clay: Beyond the Wheel
DESCRIPTION:This four-week hand building ceramics class is designed as a perfect companion to wheel throwing and an excellent alternative for those looking to explore a completely different side of working with clay. \nWhile wheel throwing is more streamlined and technical\, hand building is slower\, more organic\, and highly expressive. In this class\, students will work entirely without the wheel\, learning a whole new set of skills that emphasize form\, texture\, surface design\, and sculptural freedom. \nParticipants will create functional items such as mugs and plates\, while also exploring molds and hand-sculpted forms that cannot be made on the wheel. Hand building allows for more detailed surfaces\, decorative elements\, and experimental shapes\, making it ideal for artists who enjoy a more tactile\, flexible\, and creative process. \nThis class is especially well suited for beginners\, as hand building offers an approachable entry point into ceramics. It is also a great next step for wheel throwers who want to expand their skill set and gain a deeper understanding of clay as a material. \nClass Dates: Tuesdays\, April 21 & 28\, and May 5 & 12 \nAll necessary materials are provided for this hands-on experience.

SUMMARY:Oversoul Theatre Collective Workshop Revives a Legacy of Black Theater in New Bedford
DESCRIPTION:A historic thread of community based Black theater is being renewed as Oversoul Theatre Collective\, Inc.\, in cooperation with 3rd Eye Unlimited\, relaunches its improvisational training space as part of the Griot’s Corner workshop series. Led by multi award winning playwright\, director\, and arts educator Mwalim\, the workshop invites actors\, spoken artists\, musicians\, dancers\, and emerging performers from New Bedford’s Black\, Cape Verdean\, Caribbean\, and Latino communities to help build a new theater ensemble grounded in cultural storytelling. \nThe program revives Oversoul’s original youth theater initiative known as “The Studio\,” first introduced in New Bedford in 1997. The Studio met weekly in the basement of the Greater New Bedford Boys & Girls Club and staged performances throughout the city\, including the Tiki Room at the Cape Verdean Ultramarine Band Club\, the Unitarian Church\, and UMass Dartmouth. Developed using the New African Method\, a training approach blending System and Method acting with Brecht’s Alienation Affect and literacy based education\, the program nurtured a generation of local artists. Among those who passed through The Studio as teens were hip hop artists Siah Law and Tem Blessed\, spoken word artist Iva Brito\, and vocalist Bishop the Shadow Man. \nOversoul Theatre Collective itself grew from the legacy of Boston’s New African Company\, Inc.\, New England’s oldest continuing professional Black theater company\, founded in 1968 by the late James Spruill and Gustave Johnson under the motto “Theater for the People.” That lineage connects the New Bedford initiative to a broader history of Black performance traditions stretching from the African Grove Theatre of 1821\, through the Lafayette Players of the early twentieth century\, to the creative surge of the Black Arts Movement of the 1960s. \nNow returning through Griot’s Corner\, the workshop centers improvisation\, ensemble building\, and collaborative creation. Participants will work together to develop an original performance piece scheduled for presentation in May\, while laying the foundation for a long term theater ensemble dedicated to producing works by\, for\, and about Black and Brown people in the city. \n“Theater began as improvisation\,” says Mwalim. “Before scripts\, before stages\, there was community storytelling. We’re bringing that spirit back so our people can tell our stories on our own terms.” \nTuesdays at 8pm\n3rd Eye Unlimited; 230 Union Street; New Bedford\, MA

SUMMARY:ArtREADS
DESCRIPTION:Dive into the captivating world of art and literature with ArtReads\, the Art Museum’s book club. Join us as we come together to discuss The Power and the Glory by Graham Greene. \nArtREADS is a welcoming\, discussion-based book club that brings together literature\, art\, and shared ideas. Participants are encouraged to read the book in advance and come ready to engage\, listen\, and reflect in a relaxed museum setting. \nNow Reading: The Power and the Glory \nMexico\, the late 1930s: A paramilitary group has outlawed the Catholic Church and is executing its clergy. Now the last priest is on the run\, fleeing not just an unshakable police lieutenant but also his own wavering morals. As he scrapes his way toward salvation\, haunted by an affair from his past\, the nameless “whiskey priest” is pulled between the bottle and the Bible\, tempted to renounce his religion yet unable to ignore the higher calling he’s chosen.
