SUMMARY:Forging Independence | Building a Nation
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution\, NBWM will open a new suite of conjoined galleries in that explore stories of independence\, struggle\, and citizenship in the region during the late colonial and early Republican period (1760-1830). \nForging Independence | Building a Nation introduces connections between historical events and pressing issues of today\, asking visitors to consider what ideas are embodied in the terms and ideas of Independence and Nationhood. Words like patriotism\, freedom\, taxation\, citizenship\, liberty\, equality\, justice\, tolerance\, and independence serve as keystones within the installation to encourage thoughtful engagement with concepts that transcend the past and directly connect with our present. Associations forged between objects\, concepts\, and individuals broach insightful civic-minded questions about what it means to be “American.” What did colonial citizens think America should or would be\, and how do we today continue to ask those questions and shape that outcome today?

SUMMARY:Resistance: Cultural and Political Narratives in Mexican Art
DESCRIPTION:The exhibition features works by contemporary Mexican artists whose practices primarily engage questions of freedom of expression\, history\, and social justice and serve as public channels of dissent. Through sculpture\, installation\, performance-based documentation\, textiles\, and printmaking\, the exhibition considers how artists reflect on Indigenous knowledge\, collective memory\, and contemporary social contexts. \nThe exhibition includes work by Jacobo and María Ángeles\, master Oaxacan wood carvers\, best known for their sculptural interpretations of tonas and nahuales—vivid\, fantastical wooden sculptures that blend imagination\, folklore\, and cultural symbolism\, drawing on Zapotec cosmologies. Their works stand as both cultural continuity and political assertion in the face of erasure. \nThe exhibition also features work by Adela Goldbard\, whose practice centers on collective memory\, power\, and the ways history is constructed\, erased\, or ritualized—often through acts that are both symbolic and materially destructive—and prints\nby Mario Guzmán\, who utilizes graphic art as a tool for social engagement with a strong emphasis on community\,\nlabor\, and political struggle\, alongside members of Subterráneos\, a collective he leads in Oaxaca\, rooted in socially engaged printmaking traditions that address political and community-based concerns. \nRenata Cassiano Alvarez presents sculptures from her ongoing series Siempre Voy a Volver (“I Will Always Return”)\, alongside related works that reflect on memory\, migration\, and the emotional pull of home. Using intimate materials and hand-built processes\, Alvarez creates sculptural forms marked by touch\, wear\, and repetition. The works suggest bodies\, vessels\, and domestic gestures without resolving into literal representation\, allowing absence and longing to remain central to their meaning.

SUMMARY:AHA! Night: Preservation Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Each May is National Preservation Month\, and it gives us the opportunity to spotlight the vibrant art\, history\, architecture\, and stories that make New Bedford the unique city it is today. Join us for the celebration on Thursday\, May 14th\, for AHA! Night: Preservation Celebration.\nOn this special day\, the Nathan and Mary (Polly) Johnson House will be open from 6 – 7:30 PM with docent-led tours highlighting the history of the house and its inhabitants. \nThis house stands as a quiet but powerful reminder that preservation is not just about saving a building—it’s about safeguarding the stories that shaped our nation. As the first free home of Frederick Douglass and his wife Anna and the home of Black abolitionists Nathan and Mary (Polly) Johnson\, the house holds deep meaning as a place of refuge\, courage\, and new beginnings. Many thanks to the New Bedford Historical Society for making this possible during May’s AHA! Night. \nAlso happening on AHA! Night will be self-guided walking tours\, art exhibits\, artist talks\, free admission to downtown museums\, live music\, and so much more. May’s AHA! Night is also part of ArtWeek SouthCoast\, an annual festival celebrating creativity in our communities.\nSave the date and explore New Bedford’s past\, present\, and future this AHA! Night. \nMore details at ahanewbedford.org/next-aha

SUMMARY:Exhibit Opening: In History’s Wake
DESCRIPTION:Stop by the Fishing Heritage Center to discover our newest exhibit\, In History’s Wake\, which explores the complicated history and legacy of the 1976 Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act (MSA). The Act established the 200-mile limit and laid the groundwork for much of the governance and oversight that manages the commercial fishing industry today. An important piece of legislation\, MSA continues to provoke strong reactions on New Bedford’s waterfront. More than a mere examination of the MSA’s legislative history\, this exhibit examines the evolution of the industry and the often-challenging relationship between commercial fishermen\, the state and federal government\, environmentalists\, and scientists. \nLearn more on FHC’s website: https://fishingheritagecenter.org/exhibit-opening-in-historys-wake/

SUMMARY:AHHHhhh - Deep Afro Jazz House Music @ The Speakeasy
DESCRIPTION:As downtown New Bedford comes alive for AHA! Night\, the energy doesn’t fade when the galleries close—it transforms. AHHHhhh: The AHA Night After-Party\, presented by Oversoul Theatre Collective\, Inc. in collaboration with The Zeiterion Theatre\, invites you deeper into the night on March 12 at 8pm inside the intimate Speakeasy at the Zeiterion (684 Purchase St). \nAt its core\, AHHHhhh is more than an after-party—it’s a continuation of the South Coast’s creative pulse\, bridging visual art\, performance\, and underground dance culture into one immersive nightlife experience. Helmed by Mwalim DaPhunkee Professor and The ZYG 808 of WAMPTRONICA\, the evening explores the evolving language of Deep Afro Jazz-infused House music—where rhythm\, soul\, and improvisation meet the dancefloor. Instrumentalists are welcome to jam along with the grooves. \nThe Speakeasy—known for its close\, atmospheric setting—becomes the perfect backdrop for this kind of sonic exploration. Here\, the distance between DJ and audience disappears\, creating the kind of shared musical energy that defines true underground culture. It’s not just about hearing the music—it’s about feeling it\, collectively. \nWAMPTRONICA’s mission has always centered on pushing beyond the boundaries of conventional dance music. SUMMARY:Figure Drawing Open Studio

Our open figure drawing studio is intended to provide artists of all levels a relaxed environment and a dedicated space where they are able to continue the tradition of working from a live nude model. \nSessions are three hours long\, and will start with a series of short gestures and ranging from 5-10 minutes before moving into longer 30 minute poses. SUMMARY:Hand Building with Clay: Beyond the Wheel
DESCRIPTION:This four-week hand building ceramics class is designed as a perfect companion to wheel throwing and an excellent alternative for those looking to explore a completely different side of working with clay. \nWhile wheel throwing is more streamlined and technical\, hand building is slower\, more organic\, and highly expressive. In this class\, students will work entirely without the wheel\, learning a whole new set of skills that emphasize form\, texture\, surface design\, and sculptural freedom. \nParticipants will create functional items such as mugs and plates\, while also exploring molds and hand-sculpted forms that cannot be made on the wheel. Hand building allows for more detailed surfaces\, decorative elements\, and experimental shapes\, making it ideal for artists who enjoy a more tactile\, flexible\, and creative process. \nThis class is especially well suited for beginners\, as hand building offers an approachable entry point into ceramics. It is also a great next step for wheel throwers who want to expand their skill set and gain a deeper understanding of clay as a material. \nClass Dates: Mondays\, June 1\, 8\, 15\, 22 \nAll necessary materials are provided for this hands-on experience.

SUMMARY:The THUMP & SOUL SESSION @ The Gallery Bar
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, May 16\, the rhythm finds a home inside The Gallery Bar\, as The THUMP & SOUL SESSION returns to one of the city’s most inviting and soulful spaces. Known for its warm lighting\, art-filled walls\, and genuinely welcoming atmosphere\, The Gallery Bar isn’t just a venue—it’s a gathering place. A space where conversation flows easily\, creativity is encouraged\, and every person who walks through the door feels like they belong. \nAs the night unfolds\, The THUMP & SOUL SESSION transforms the room into a living\, breathing experience of sound and movement. The intimacy of the space brings you closer to every note\, every rhythm\, every shift in energy\, creating a vibe that is both electric and deeply grounded. \nAt the center of it all is WAMPTRONICA\, whose approach goes beyond performance into intention. Their sessions are built on the idea of openness: a place where you can arrive as you are\, release the weight of the week\, and find yourself in rhythm with everyone around you. \nIf you’ve been looking for a space that feels real—warm\, social\, expressive\, and alive—this is where you need to be. Whether you come with friends or step in solo\, you’ll find your place in the flow. Step into the room\, into the sound\, and into the community. \nBe there. Feel it. Be part of the SESSION.

SUMMARY:The THUMP & SOUL SESSION @ The Gallery Bar
DESCRIPTION:New Bedford’s underground dance scene continues to rise\, and on Saturday\, May 16 at 9pm\, The THUMP & SOUL SESSION arrives at a venue that perfectly matches its spirit: The Gallery Bar NB. Known for its vibrant energy and commitment to inclusivity\, The Gallery Bar has quickly established itself as one of the city’s most exciting cultural hubs—making it an ideal home for a night built on rhythm\, connection\, and movement. \nCo-presented by Oversoul Theatre Collective and curated by WAMPTRONICA\, The THUMP & SOUL SESSION is more than a party; it is a fully immersive dance experience driven by what they call Deep Afro Jazz House Music—a rich fusion of Afro House\, deep house\, jazz\, soul\, and global rhythmic traditions. The result is a sound that feels both rooted and forward-moving\, designed to pull dancers into a shared\, evolving groove. \nThat sense of intention extends beyond the dance floor. WAMPTRONICA’s growing presence includes their weekly radio show\, FROM THE UNDERGROUND\, airing Tuesdays at 8pm on WNB One Radio and streaming as a podcast across all platforms—building a wider community around the same sonic philosophy that powers their live sessions. \nWhat makes this particular installment stand out is the setting. The Gallery Bar is more than just a nightlife destination; it is an LGBTQ+ owned\, Safe Space Alliance–recognized venue that prioritizes inclusivity\, creativity\, and community. With its open layout\, expressive atmosphere\, and a crowd that reflects the diversity of New Bedford itself\, the space encourages exactly what The THUMP & SOUL SESSION is all about: freedom of movement\, self-expression\, and collective joy. It is a place where the barriers typically found in nightlife dissolve\, replaced by a sense of welcome that can be felt as soon as you walk in. \nThat alignment between venue and experience is what makes May 16 one to watch. As WAMPTRONICA brings its signature sound into the room\, the result promises to be immersive: deep rhythms pulsing through a space designed for connection\, dancers and listeners feeding off one another\, and a vibe that lingers long after the music fades. \nFor those paying attention to where New Bedford’s creative pulse is heading\, this is not just another night out; it is part of a growing movement. And for anyone ready to experience something authentic\, vibrant\, and alive\, The THUMP & SOUL SESSION at The Gallery Bar is exactly where you will want to be.

SUMMARY:The Art of Wine | May 8–17
DESCRIPTION:During South Coast Art Week\, we’re highlighting wines that go beyond the glass—crafted with intention and shaped by place. \nA few things to sip on this week: \nWine reflects terroir—a sense of place in every glass \nBlending is balance—structure\, contrast\, and composition \nTexture and timing matter—nothing happens by accident \nGallery Pour (Limited Time)\nLady of the Sunshine “Chevey” – Sauvignon Blanc / Chardonnay \nA beautifully composed blend—bright citrus\, orchard fruit\, and a soft\, layered finish. \nAvailable by the glass ($18) or 2 ounce taste ($8) while it lasts. \nThe Story Behind the Bottle\nBehind the wine is winemaker Gina Giugni. \nEach label begins as a hand-embroidered piece\, then photographed and finished with her own handwriting—making every bottle a reflection of both her artistry and her winemaking. \nBeyond the label\, Gina is a second-generation biodynamic farmer who founded Lady of the Sunshine in 2017—bringing a deep\, place-driven approach to both her farming and winemaking.
