SUMMARY:Forging Independence | Building a Nation
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution\, NBWM will open a new suite of conjoined galleries in that explore stories of independence\, struggle\, and citizenship in the region during the late colonial and early Republican period (1760-1830). \nForging Independence | Building a Nation introduces connections between historical events and pressing issues of today\, asking visitors to consider what ideas are embodied in the terms and ideas of Independence and Nationhood. Words like patriotism\, freedom\, taxation\, citizenship\, liberty\, equality\, justice\, tolerance\, and independence serve as keystones within the installation to encourage thoughtful engagement with concepts that transcend the past and directly connect with our present. Associations forged between objects\, concepts\, and individuals broach insightful civic-minded questions about what it means to be “American.” What did colonial citizens think America should or would be\, and how do we today continue to ask those questions and shape that outcome today?

SUMMARY:Proteanna: Susan Heideman
DESCRIPTION:Artist Susan Heideman (b. 1950) has explored bio-morphic shapes of the ocean’s “in-between entities” for nearly twenty years in her Proteanna series and beyond. The real and imagined floating\, aqueous shapes of her work evoke the forms of invertebrate creatures that often remind us of primordial beings living in the depths of the sea. \nThe colorful hand embroidered large scale works that define the Proteanna series are “hybrid” in nature and include a mix of older works combined with newer paintings and constructions. The texture and layering create an almost three-dimensional experience that transport the visitor into a wondrous underwater world of possibility. \nArtist Statement: \nIn 2006 the Proteanna Series began with an experiment. For the first time\, using black embroidery thread\, I tried stitching imagery into an existing watercolor I’d always felt lacking. The piece seemed to come alive. Suddenly the idea of combining stitching\, watercolor and other aqueous media on larger sheets of thick watercolor paper had become entrancing. I began tearing up random\, ragged fragments of my old monotypes and stitching them onto the paper. I continued stitching\, painting\, and layering\, attaching collaged pieces strictly through stitching. This was the beginning of the ongoing Proteanna Series. I coined the word “proteanna\,” derived from the word “protean\,” to suggest entities and their situations straddling and crossing taxonomies\, mutating beyond classification. The process is as improvisatory as nature; forms develop\, morph\, and reconstitute. Fragments get sewn atop fragments\, creating relief surfaces that stratify. Might my grafting and hybridizing processes be likened to nature’s own irrepressibly continuous transforming? \nBio: \nHeideman is a Smith College Professor Emerita who taught painting and drawing within Smith’s Art Department for thirty-six years. During that time\, she maintained her studio practice in Boston; she continues to work and live in Boston since retiring. She has works in the following permanent collections: Smith College Museum (several pieces); \nDanforth Museum of Art at Framingham State University; Rose Art Museum of Brandeis University; Boston College’s McMullen Museum of Art; DeCordova Museum and Sculpture Park; Boston Public Library Collection of Prints and Drawings (multiple pieces); and The William and Uytendal Collection of Works by Women Artists at Bryn Mawr College. Her works are also represented in numerous corporate collections. She has shown up and down the East Coast and New York City in commercial galleries\, non-profit galleries\, and museums.

SUMMARY:Sailors' Valentines: Maritime Art from the Heart
DESCRIPTION:Shellwork mosaics\, known as sailor’s valentines\, consist of colorful shells in intricate arrangements housed in octagonal wooden boxes. Created primarily between 1830 and 1890\, their designs incorporate hearts\, flowers\, and nautical symbols like anchors and compass roses. Sometimes they carry romantic messages written out in tiny shells. \nDespite their name\, sailor’s valentines were not made by sailors at sea. Instead\, they were produced for the tourist trade by Barbadian women from locally sourced shells. In the 1800s\, Barbados\, located at the easternmost part of the Caribbean\, was a center of maritime supply and distribution. US ships often stopped at the small island\, where sailors purchased keepsakes\, like valentines\, for loved ones at home. This cottage industry for locally made goods provided crucial economic opportunities for women of a color under British colonial occupation. The Slavery Abolition Act came into effect in Barbados in 1834\, and previously enslaved Barbadians needed work. While Barbadian men traveled and labored off island\, women provided for their families. Shellwork craft production was a lifeline. \nThe popularity of sailor’s valentines emerged concurrent with the rise of a new scientific discipline – conchology\, or the study of shells\, the popular pastime of amateur shell collecting\, and the domestication of the seaside for tourism. Common shells in sailor’s valentines include Barbados keyhole limpets\, purple sea snails\, King Venus clams\, cockles\, and colorful small cowries. Shells could evoke a personal trip to the beach\, a voyage further afield\, scientific interest\, or international knowledge. While some shells were souvenirs\, serious shell collectors could order shells from around the world expanding their collection to be truly comprehensive. As with other forms of scientific collecting\, the demand for shells and shellwork did contribute to the decline of certain species of mollusks. \nIn the 1900s\, American women adopted shellwork as a form of artistic expression. Collector and artist Evelyn Way Kendall (1893-1979) summered in Marion\, MA starting in 1926 and made numerous sailor’s valentines\, two of which are on view in the exhibition. Between 1977 and 1982\, Cape Cod folk artists Ralph Cahoon (1910-1982)\, Martha Cahoon (1905-1999) and Bernard “Bernie” Woodman (1920-1986) further developed this artistic tradition. They created dozens of delicate and charming sailor’s valentines\, combining Bernie’s beautiful shellwork with Ralph and Martha’s whimsical\, nautical fantasy paintings. Seven are included. Contemporary maker Sandi Blanda (b. 1959) follows a traditional format\, while artist Duke Riley (b. 1972) creates oversize vividly colored compositions from plastic trash collected on East coast beaches. Informed by maritime folk arts and the sailor’s valentine\, Riley’s work educates audiences about environmental pollution and marine debris. \nThis exhibition was organized\, in part\, by the Cahoon Museum of American Art\, where it was curated by Leeann Ream \nIt is supported by the William M. Wood Foundation\, Dave and Marilyn Ferkinhoff\, and the Boston Marine Society

SUMMARY:Vanishing Ecologies: Speculative Futures
DESCRIPTION:Vanishing Ecologies: Speculative Futures\nJUNE 25 – OCTOBER 11\, 2026 \nVanishing Ecologies: Speculative Futures brings together an international group of contemporary artists working across sculpture\, installation\, painting\, photography\, sound\, and time-based media. The exhibition examines artistic responses to the Anthropocene\, a period characterized by the irreversible impact of human activity on the planet\, and considers potential futures that may arise as a result. \nThrough immersive and materially innovative works\, Vanishing Ecologies addresses climate change\, mass extinction\, environmental toxicity\, and the enduring legacy of the atomic age. The exhibition examines the increasingly complex relationships among technology\, ecology\, and time. Some artists investigate the fragile boundary between collapse and adaptation\, while others envision post-human futures\, ecological resilience\, and planetary memory. \nThroughout the exhibition\, artists translate ecological questions into experiences that are simultaneously material\, emotional\, and speculative. Representations of extinct species\, consumer waste\, fragile glass forms\, contaminated landscapes\, organic growth\, and imagined future artifacts serve as frameworks for considering a planet in transition. These works navigate the intersection of scientific inquiry and artistic invention\, tracing the intricate relationships among human activity\, technological systems\, and the living world. Rather than solely documenting environmental crises\, Vanishing Ecologies investigates how art can expand the capacity for imagination. The exhibition encourages viewers to reflect on memory\, resilience\, and deep time\, while contemplating futures that remain uncertain\, interconnected\, and evolving. \nThe exhibition features works by Rachel Berwick\, Thomas Deininger\, Beth Lipman\, Aimée Lamaire\, Minga Opazo\, Rachel Ostrow\, Anaïs Tondeur\, and Nicolas Touron.

SUMMARY:CALL FOR ARTISTS: Analog: An Antidote to AI Art
DESCRIPTION:Call for Artists\nENTRY DEADLINE: 9/24/26\nCASH PRIZES: $1000 First Place | $500 Second Place \nIn an era shaped by artificial intelligence\, Analog: An Antidote to AI Art celebrates the enduring power of human imagination\, intuition\, and authentic artistic expression. This exhibition invites artists whose work reflects the distinctly human experience of making\, embracing experimentation\, imperfection\, memory\, materiality\, and lived experience. Rather than rejecting technology\, Analog asks a timely question: What makes art unmistakably human? We welcome original work in all visual art media and genres\, including painting\, sculpture\, ceramics\, printmaking\, textiles\, fiber\, photography\, installation\, mixed media\, assemblage\, drawing\, book arts\, jewelry\, sound art\, olfactive art\, biophilic practices\, and other forms that demonstrate personal vision and meaningful engagement with materials and process. \nAs AI-generated imagery becomes ubiquitous\, Analog turns our attention to what algorithms cannot replicate: intuition\, vulnerability\, touch\, chance\, personal history\, and the countless decisions embedded in the creative process. The exhibition celebrates originality as an expression of curiosity\, resilience\, and the uniquely human impulse to make meaning from the world around us. We seek work that reveals touch\, struggle\, experimentation\, art that reflects the imperfect\, unpredictable\, and deeply personal nature of human creation. \nABOUT THE JUROR \nRoddy Schrock is a sound artist and institution-builder who has spent his career on a single question: what does it actually take to build the conditions under which transformative work can exist\, and endure? Trained at Mills College (MFA in Electronic Music and Recording Media) and the Institute of Sonology in The Hague\, he has performed across Japan\, Europe\, South America\, and the United States\, with commissions from Meet the Composer and Ostrava New Music Days and essays published by MIT Press and Hyperallergic. For a decade he directed Eyebeam\, New York’s center for art and technology\, where he grew direct support to artists more than 500%\, made it the first residency certified by W.A.G.E. for fair pay\, and supported the launch of the Eyebeam Center for the Future of Journalism\, whose commissions garnered a Pulitzer Prize–winning investigation. He has taught in SVA’s Curatorial Practice MA program and at STEIM Amsterdam\, CCA\, and NYU’s ITP\, and created Informer\, a podcast of conversations with artists and thinkers. Now Executive Director of the New York Zen Center for Contemplative Care\, he also runs Ultradilute\, a practice tending the whole health of artists and creative leaders\, and advises OPEN and the Netherlands-America Foundation’s Cultural Committee. He lives and works between New York and Providence\, Rhode Island.

SUMMARY:What Remains\, a solo exhibition by Dilge Dilsiz\, artist-in-residence
DESCRIPTION:What Remains is Dilge Dilsiz’s solo exhibition created during her artist residency at New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park\, located at the Visitor Center at 33 William Street\, New Bedford\, MA 02740. \nVisitor Center hours are Wednesday – Sunday: 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM (Monday and Tuesday: Closed). Please check park hours at https://www.nps.gov/nebe or call (508) 996-4095. The Visitor Center is free. Upon entering\, ask the front desk where the exhibition is located. \nAbout the Exhibition\nThis new body of work considers what happens when a contemporary body encounters the physical residues of New Bedford’s rich history. Through long-exposure photography and immersive light installation\, Dilsiz explores belonging\, memory\, and how a landscape holds history long after the bodies that shaped it are gone. \nMoving through four distinct key sites—the working waterfront\, Fort Taber\, former textile mills\, and the hurricane barrier—the collection traces New Bedford’s evolution across land\, water\, labor\, and history. \nWithin the photographs\, long exposures allow figures to dissolve into net\, stone\, brick\, and water—blurring the line where the body ends and the landscape begins. Inside the gallery\, lantern light and metallic prints respond directly to the viewer’s movement\, referencing New Bedford’s legacy as “the city that lit the world” through whale oil illumination. \nAbout the Artist\nDilge Dilsiz is a Turkish interdisciplinary artist based in Cincinnati\, Ohio\, and an Assistant Professor of Graphic + Experience Design at Miami University. Working across photography\, installation\, performance\, poetry\, design\, and new media\, her collaborative practice examines identity\, memory\, and belonging. She holds an MFA from Stony Brook University and dual bachelor’s degrees in Studio Art and Psychology (minor in Architectural Studies) from Lafayette College. Her work has been exhibited across the United States and Europe\, supported by residencies including Live Art Ireland and the New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park.

SUMMARY:agriCultural: A Biennial Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:agriCultural: A Biennial Exhibition\nSeptember 10 – November 29\, 2026 \nThe Southeastern Massachusetts Agricultural Partnership (SEMAP)\, in partnership with the New Bedford Art Museum is pleased to present agriCultural: A Biennial Exhibition\, a juried exhibition of works from artists who are also farmers\, farmer who are also artists\, and artist that take deep inspiration from the world of agriculture. The work in this exhibition investigates the complex and undertold stories of agriculture\, farming and the contemporary stories held in the land and sea. The work highlights the intersectionality in the art of farming\, the act of creating and the important cultural need agriculture holds in our communities and our culture. \nThe South Coast has long been fertile territory for both farming and art making. For millennia\, the Wampanoag people farmed in this region\, and later\, colonial settlers learned agrarian practices from local peoples. Art making also flourished here\, supported in part by patrons of the whaling industry. \nTo reflect these layered histories\, our organizations issued a call for art that brought together a diverse group of artists whose work speaks to the South Coast’s natural beauty and distinctive character. \nagriCultural invites us to see agriculture in new ways and reminds us of its vital role in nourishing our lives and communities.

SUMMARY:SouthCoast Neighborhood Builders: Introduction to Incremental Development
DESCRIPTION:Who will build New Bedford’s future? We think local\, incremental developers are the right people for the job. \nMost people sense that something is wrong with how we build our communities. Housing feels out of reach\, downtowns struggle to thrive\, and development often seems risky\, disconnected\, and reserved for only the biggest players… But it wasn’t always this way. \nJoin us for an engaging introduction to incremental development — the traditional pattern that created America’s most beloved neighborhoods through small\, locally driven projects built one step at a time. \nWhether you’re interested in becoming a small-scale developer\, creating a project in your own neighborhood\, or are a local leader looking to encourage better growth in your community\, this free public lecture will explore how our development systems changed after World War II and what practical alternatives exist today. You’ll discover how incremental development can lower risk\, rebuild local ownership\, and create more adaptable\, resilient communities — one small project at a time. \nAbout the speaker: Marques King is an architect\, urban designer\, and Detroit native who has spent his career building sustainable\, equitable neighborhoods in his hometown — as Economic Development & Design Manager for EJDevCo\, a nonprofit developer focused on Detroit’s Eastside\, and founder of Fabric[K] Design. \nThis talk kicks off SouthCoast Neighborhood Builders\, a new SCPFP program training and supporting the next generation of local developers in New Bedford. Stick around after the lecture for a live conversation between our speaker and local developers and leaders — and let us know at registration if you’d like to hear more as the program takes shape. \nIn partnership with One SouthCoast Chamber\, WHALE\, and the City of New Bedford Office of Housing & Community Development.

SUMMARY:Zeiterion Creative Classroom Presents Let's Jam: An Introduction to Jazz and Blues Improvisation
DESCRIPTION:Jazz is a living conversation: between musicians\, between the individual and the community\, and between the present moment and the history that shaped the music. In this interactive workshop\, participants will explore the blues and jazz improvisation through listening\, storytelling\, rhythm\, call-and-response\, and accessible group exercises. We will examine how musicians transform personal and collective experience into sound\, how improvisers communicate without a script\, and how the blues provides a foundation for musical expression across jazz\, R&B\, Afro-Caribbean music\, and many other traditions. The sessions will combine live demonstration\, guided listening\, historical context\, audience participation\, and community improvisation. The emphasis will be on listening\, expression\, musical vocabulary building and connection rather than technical virtuosity or “tooting one’s own horn.” Participants will leave with a clearer understanding of how jazz improvisation works and several practical ways to listen to—or participate in—the music with greater confidence. No previous experience with jazz or improvisation is required. The workshop is open to instrumentalists\, vocalists\, music students\, educators\, listeners\, and community members who are curious about how improvised music works. \nParticipants who play an instrument are encouraged to bring it\, but an instrument is not required. \nThis class is suitable for participants ages 14+.

SUMMARY:Underground Railroad Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:Join Park Volunteer Bob for an immersive Underground Railroad Walking Tour\, where you’ll uncover the hidden stories of those who defied oppression and carved a new future for themselves. \nThe Underground Railroad—a courageous network of people from all walks of life—was a lifeline for enslaved individuals seeking liberty. Their fight for justice echoes through time\, influencing movements that continue to challenge racial injustice today. \nWalk their footsteps. Hear their stories. Feel their struggle and triumph. SUMMARY:Author Book Talk: Seth Rockman
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, September 24 | 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM\nFree\, virtual program; registration required \nAbout the Author: Seth Rockman is a historian of the United States focusing on the period between the American Revolution and the Civil War and serves as George L. Littlefield Professor of American History and Director of Undergraduate Studies in the Department of History at Brown University. His research unfolds at the intersection of slavery studies\, labor history\, material culture studies\, and the history of capitalism. Rockman’s earlier work— the award-winning Scraping By: Wage Labor\, Slavery\, and Survival in Early Baltimore (2009) and the co-edited volume Slavery’s Capitalism: A New History of American Economic Development (2016)— sought to better understand the relationship of slavery and capitalism in the American past. In December 2022\, Rockman shared his research findings with the US House Financial Services Committee in live testimony. Rockman’s newest book\, Plantation Goods: A Material History of American Slavery\, was published by University of Chicago Press in Fall 2024 and named a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in History. The book won the 2025 Philip Taft Labor History Book Award\, earned distinction as a finalist for the Mark Lynton History Prize\, and appears on the longlist for the Cundill Prize. At Brown\, Rockman sits on the faculty advisory board of the Ruth J. Simmons Center for the Study of Slavery and Justice and leads their Slavery and Finance research cluster. He published “The Dialectics of Racism and Repair” in the 2021 re-issue of the university’s influential Slavery & Justice Report. Rockman is a faculty affiliate of the William R. Rhodes Center for International Economics and Finance and regularly teaches a course on slavery and capitalism for the IE-Brown Executive MBA program. \nAbout the Book: The industrializing North and the agricultural South—that’s how we have been taught to think about the United States in the early nineteenth century. But in doing so\, we overlook the economic ties that held the nation together before the Civil War. We miss slavery’s long reach into small New England communities\, just as we fail to see the role of Northern manufacturing in shaping the terrain of human bondage in the South. Using plantation goods—the shirts\, hats\, hoes\, shovels\, shoes\, axes\, and whips made in the North for use in the South—historian Seth Rockman locates the biggest stories in American history in the everyday objects that stitched together the lives and livelihoods of Americans—white and Black\, male and female\, enslaved and free—across an expanding nation. By following the stories of material objects\, such as shoes made by Massachusetts farm women that found their way to the feet of a Mississippi slave\, Rockman reveals a national economy organized by slavery—a slavery that outsourced the production of its supplies to the North\, and a North that outsourced its slavery to the South. Melding business and labor history through powerful storytelling\, Plantation Goods brings northern industrialists\, southern slaveholders\, enslaved field hands\, and paid factory laborers into the same picture. In one part of the country\, entrepreneurs envisioned fortunes to be made from “planter’s hoes” and rural women spent their days weaving “negro cloth” and assembling “slave brogans.” In another\, enslaved people actively consumed textiles and tools imported from the North to contest their bondage. In between\, merchants\, marketers\, storekeepers\, and debt collectors laid claim to the profits of a thriving interregional trade. Examining producers and consumers linked in economic and moral relationships across great geographic and political distances\, Plantation Goods explores how people in the nineteenth century thought about complicity with slavery while showing how slavery structured life nationwide and established a modern world of entrepreneurship and exploitation. Rockman brings together lines of American history that have for too long been told separately\, as slavery and capitalism converge in something as deceptively ordinary as a humble pair of shoes.

SUMMARY:Walking Tour: In the Footsteps of Douglass and Melville\, two literary giants!
DESCRIPTION:Join Ranger Rufai for an immersive journey through New Bedford\, where Frederick Douglass and Herman Melville set foot in 1841—each leaving behind a legacy shaped by this bustling port town. \nFrom the wharves that welcomed Melville’s maritime imagination to the streets that gave Douglass his first taste of true freedom\, New Bedford was more than just a stop along their journeys—it was a place of transformation. \nDouglass\, newly liberated from bondage\, wrote\, “I was now living in a new world. I was wide awake to its advantages.” His time in New Bedford ignited his fight for justice and equality\, cementing his role as one of America’s most powerful voices for freedom. \nMelville\, inspired by the whaling industry’s grandeur\, painted a vivid portrait of the town in Moby-Dick\, noting\, “Nowhere in all America will you find more patrician-like houses\, parks and gardens more opulent\, than in New Bedford…All these brave houses and flowery gardens came from the Atlantic\, Pacific\, and Indian oceans.” \nFollow their footsteps. Hear their words. See New Bedford through their eyes. History isn’t just read—it’s lived. Experience the city that shaped great minds and great movements.

SUMMARY:Walking Tour: Blubber and Bones
DESCRIPTION:Join Ranger Erin for an illuminating journey into the industry that transformed New Bedford into a global powerhouse—the city that fueled economies\, powered homes\, and shaped history. \nFor decades\, New Bedford was the epicenter of the whaling industry\, producing the most sought-after commodity of its time: whale oil. This liquid gold illuminated streets\, fueled machinery\, and kept lamps burning in homes across the world. As whalers braved treacherous oceans\, they returned with barrels of oil that made New Bedford the wealthiest city per capita in the United States. \nBut beyond industry and commerce\, this city became a beacon for opportunity. The whaling economy attracted people from all backgrounds—sailors\, merchants\, abolitionists\, and refugees—each finding their place in a town driven by ambition and resilience. \nStep into history. Witness the legacy. See how New Bedford lit the world—and shaped the future.

SUMMARY:Figure Drawing Open Studio
DESCRIPTION:Drawing from a live model has been an important part of many formal artistic practices since the Renaissance. Our open figure drawing studio is intended to provide artists of all levels a relaxed environment and a dedicated space where they are able to continue the tradition of working from a live nude model. \nSessions are three hours long\, and will start with a series of short gestures and ranging from 5-10 minutes before moving into longer 30 minute poses. Each class typically concludes with an hour long pose. \nThere will be no formal instruction during the class; artists are encouraged to work from the model independently\, in any medium they wish to bring.
