SUMMARY:Forging Independence | Building a Nation
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution\, NBWM will open a new suite of conjoined galleries in that explore stories of independence\, struggle\, and citizenship in the region during the late colonial and early Republican period (1760-1830). \nForging Independence | Building a Nation introduces connections between historical events and pressing issues of today\, asking visitors to consider what ideas are embodied in the terms and ideas of Independence and Nationhood. Words like patriotism\, freedom\, taxation\, citizenship\, liberty\, equality\, justice\, tolerance\, and independence serve as keystones within the installation to encourage thoughtful engagement with concepts that transcend the past and directly connect with our present. Associations forged between objects\, concepts\, and individuals broach insightful civic-minded questions about what it means to be “American.” What did colonial citizens think America should or would be\, and how do we today continue to ask those questions and shape that outcome today?

SUMMARY:Proteanna: Susan Heideman
DESCRIPTION:Artist Susan Heideman (b. 1950) has explored bio-morphic shapes of the ocean’s “in-between entities” for nearly twenty years in her Proteanna series and beyond. The real and imagined floating\, aqueous shapes of her work evoke the forms of invertebrate creatures that often remind us of primordial beings living in the depths of the sea. \nThe colorful hand embroidered large scale works that define the Proteanna series are “hybrid” in nature and include a mix of older works combined with newer paintings and constructions. The texture and layering create an almost three-dimensional experience that transport the visitor into a wondrous underwater world of possibility. \nArtist Statement: \nIn 2006 the Proteanna Series began with an experiment. For the first time\, using black embroidery thread\, I tried stitching imagery into an existing watercolor I’d always felt lacking. The piece seemed to come alive. Suddenly the idea of combining stitching\, watercolor and other aqueous media on larger sheets of thick watercolor paper had become entrancing. I began tearing up random\, ragged fragments of my old monotypes and stitching them onto the paper. I continued stitching\, painting\, and layering\, attaching collaged pieces strictly through stitching. This was the beginning of the ongoing Proteanna Series. I coined the word “proteanna\,” derived from the word “protean\,” to suggest entities and their situations straddling and crossing taxonomies\, mutating beyond classification. The process is as improvisatory as nature; forms develop\, morph\, and reconstitute. Fragments get sewn atop fragments\, creating relief surfaces that stratify. Might my grafting and hybridizing processes be likened to nature’s own irrepressibly continuous transforming? \nBio: \nHeideman is a Smith College Professor Emerita who taught painting and drawing within Smith’s Art Department for thirty-six years. During that time\, she maintained her studio practice in Boston; she continues to work and live in Boston since retiring. She has works in the following permanent collections: Smith College Museum (several pieces); \nDanforth Museum of Art at Framingham State University; Rose Art Museum of Brandeis University; Boston College’s McMullen Museum of Art; DeCordova Museum and Sculpture Park; Boston Public Library Collection of Prints and Drawings (multiple pieces); and The William and Uytendal Collection of Works by Women Artists at Bryn Mawr College. Her works are also represented in numerous corporate collections. She has shown up and down the East Coast and New York City in commercial galleries\, non-profit galleries\, and museums.

SUMMARY:Sailors' Valentines: Maritime Art from the Heart
DESCRIPTION:Shellwork mosaics\, known as sailor’s valentines\, consist of colorful shells in intricate arrangements housed in octagonal wooden boxes. Created primarily between 1830 and 1890\, their designs incorporate hearts\, flowers\, and nautical symbols like anchors and compass roses. Sometimes they carry romantic messages written out in tiny shells. \nDespite their name\, sailor’s valentines were not made by sailors at sea. Instead\, they were produced for the tourist trade by Barbadian women from locally sourced shells. In the 1800s\, Barbados\, located at the easternmost part of the Caribbean\, was a center of maritime supply and distribution. US ships often stopped at the small island\, where sailors purchased keepsakes\, like valentines\, for loved ones at home. This cottage industry for locally made goods provided crucial economic opportunities for women of a color under British colonial occupation. The Slavery Abolition Act came into effect in Barbados in 1834\, and previously enslaved Barbadians needed work. While Barbadian men traveled and labored off island\, women provided for their families. Shellwork craft production was a lifeline. \nThe popularity of sailor’s valentines emerged concurrent with the rise of a new scientific discipline – conchology\, or the study of shells\, the popular pastime of amateur shell collecting\, and the domestication of the seaside for tourism. Common shells in sailor’s valentines include Barbados keyhole limpets\, purple sea snails\, King Venus clams\, cockles\, and colorful small cowries. Shells could evoke a personal trip to the beach\, a voyage further afield\, scientific interest\, or international knowledge. While some shells were souvenirs\, serious shell collectors could order shells from around the world expanding their collection to be truly comprehensive. As with other forms of scientific collecting\, the demand for shells and shellwork did contribute to the decline of certain species of mollusks. \nIn the 1900s\, American women adopted shellwork as a form of artistic expression. Collector and artist Evelyn Way Kendall (1893-1979) summered in Marion\, MA starting in 1926 and made numerous sailor’s valentines\, two of which are on view in the exhibition. Between 1977 and 1982\, Cape Cod folk artists Ralph Cahoon (1910-1982)\, Martha Cahoon (1905-1999) and Bernard “Bernie” Woodman (1920-1986) further developed this artistic tradition. They created dozens of delicate and charming sailor’s valentines\, combining Bernie’s beautiful shellwork with Ralph and Martha’s whimsical\, nautical fantasy paintings. Seven are included. Contemporary maker Sandi Blanda (b. 1959) follows a traditional format\, while artist Duke Riley (b. 1972) creates oversize vividly colored compositions from plastic trash collected on East coast beaches. Informed by maritime folk arts and the sailor’s valentine\, Riley’s work educates audiences about environmental pollution and marine debris. \nThis exhibition was organized\, in part\, by the Cahoon Museum of American Art\, where it was curated by Leeann Ream \nIt is supported by the William M. Wood Foundation\, Dave and Marilyn Ferkinhoff\, and the Boston Marine Society

SUMMARY:agriCultural: A Biennial Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:agriCultural: A Biennial Exhibition\nSeptember 10 – November 29\, 2026 \nThe Southeastern Massachusetts Agricultural Partnership (SEMAP)\, in partnership with the New Bedford Art Museum is pleased to present agriCultural: A Biennial Exhibition\, a juried exhibition of works from artists who are also farmers\, farmer who are also artists\, and artist that take deep inspiration from the world of agriculture. The work in this exhibition investigates the complex and undertold stories of agriculture\, farming and the contemporary stories held in the land and sea. The work highlights the intersectionality in the art of farming\, the act of creating and the important cultural need agriculture holds in our communities and our culture. \nThe South Coast has long been fertile territory for both farming and art making. For millennia\, the Wampanoag people farmed in this region\, and later\, colonial settlers learned agrarian practices from local peoples. Art making also flourished here\, supported in part by patrons of the whaling industry. \nTo reflect these layered histories\, our organizations issued a call for art that brought together a diverse group of artists whose work speaks to the South Coast’s natural beauty and distinctive character. \nagriCultural invites us to see agriculture in new ways and reminds us of its vital role in nourishing our lives and communities.

SUMMARY:Boundless: The Book as Art
DESCRIPTION:What is a book? In its simplest form\, it is a repository of words\, images\, information\, or ideas but how can a book be reinterpreted or altered and still be a book? Where is “art” in bookmaking? How do design\, structure\, and materiality relate to the book as art? These questions underlie Boundless: The Book as Art\, a major exhibition in the Wattles Family Gallery opening in October 2026. \nThe New Bedford Whaling Museum has over 20\,000 books in its collection that range from rare folios\, first editions and scrolls to scrapbooks\, journals\, logbooks\, and artist books. Spanning nearly 500 years\, these works were printed around the globe and in dozens of languages and cover topics as diverse as shipbuilding\, natural history and global exploration to visual arts\, poetry and literature. In Boundless\, a variety of book formats from the Museum collection are placed in conversation with works from contemporary artists including Andrea Dezsö (b. 1968)\, Melanie Mowinski (b. 1970)\, Anneli Skaar (b. 1969)\, and Tracey Cockrell who transform and rethink the idea and format of the book. When exhibited alongside historic books\, these contemporary works—complex and varying in structure and design—create a dialogue around the boundaries of traditional book making and its relationship to art. \nHistoric publications include an incredible array of rare\, illustrated natural history volumes\, such as our earliest printed book\, Theobaldus’s Phisiologus Theobaldi Episcopi de naturis duodecim animalium\, printed in Cologne in 1494\, and a volume by Louis Renard showing vividly colored fish and other aquatic lifeforms printed in Paris in 1754; textile sample books produced by New Bedford factories; hair albums\, herbaria\, and seaweed albums made by regional women; early catalogs for cabinets of curiosity\, such as the Museo Cospiano (Bologna\, 1677) and Museum Wormianum (Amsterdam\, 1655); and the 1930 double volume Lakeside Press printing of Herman Melville’s classic novel Moby-Dick\, or the Whale illustrated by Rockwell Kent. Many of the books in the exhibition will be on view to the public for the first time. \nThis exhibition celebrates the inherent artistry in bookmaking\, highlighting the mastery and creativity in traditional book arts including printing\, typography\, illustration\, bookbinding\, papermaking\, and graphic design. The creative energies that go into the production of a book from start to finish encompasses entire industries of makers\, apprentices\, and craft traditions. In understanding the book arts\, the exhibition then considers the many different makers\, printers\, and users of books\, exploring cultural and social touchstones that underscore the book as a powerful and artful object.

DESCRIPTION:What happens when two friends spend 15 years making dances together? \nJoin former Parsons Dance company member Steve Vaughn and dance artist Miguel Quiñones III for stuffNjunk\, a collection of original duets celebrating friendship\, humor\, imagination\, and the absurdities of everyday life. \nThe creative history of stuffNjunk includes a remarkable chapter in Chatham\, New York\, where Vaughn and Quiñones developed work in the studio of legendary American artist Ellsworth Kelly. The opportunity was made possible through the generosity of Kelly and artist-photographer Jack Shear\, who also provided financial sponsorship for the project. \nFeaturing The Bike Ride\, a humorous interpretation of a bicycle accident told through movement and mime\, the performance offers an intimate\, entertaining introduction to contemporary dance. \nNo dance experience necessary—just curiosity! \n

Photographs will be studied as art objects and historical artifacts. Themes include technological innovations; debates between art photography\, commercial photography\, and documentary photography; government and private patronage; individual or collective endeavors; original and published prints; urban and landscape views; and the emergence of amateur photography as a practice. SUMMARY:Hand Building with Clay: Beyond the Wheel
DESCRIPTION:5:30PM – 8:30PM\nTuesdays\, October 27 – November 17 \nMembers: $210.00 | Non-Members: $235.00 \nThis four-week hand building ceramics class is designed as a perfect companion to wheel throwing and an excellent alternative for those looking to explore a completely different side of working with clay. \nWhile wheel throwing is more streamlined and technical\, hand building is slower\, more organic\, and highly expressive. In this class\, students will work entirely without the wheel\, learning a whole new set of skills that emphasize form\, texture\, surface design\, and sculptural freedom. \nParticipants will create functional items such as mugs and plates\, while also exploring molds and hand-sculpted forms that cannot be made on the wheel. Hand building allows for more detailed surfaces\, decorative elements\, and experimental shapes\, making it ideal for artists who enjoy a more tactile\, flexible\, and creative process. \nThis class is especially well suited for beginners\, as hand building offers an approachable entry point into ceramics. It is also a great next step for wheel throwers who want to expand their skill set and gain a deeper understanding of clay as a material. \nClass Dates: October 27\, November 3\, 10\, & 17) \nAll necessary materials are provided for this hands-on experience. \nAbout the Instructor\nJillian McEvoy is a ceramic artist and educator whose work draws inspiration from the hidden worlds of nature\, from insects to fossils to microorganisms and beyond. Her sculptures and installations blend traditional hand-building and wheel-throwing processes with experimental materials and approaches\, encouraging curiosity and discovery. Jillian earned her MFA in Ceramics from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth and her BFA from SUNY Cortland. As a teacher\, Jillian is passionate about sharing the joy of clay through exploration

SUMMARY:COME JOIN THE CHORUS! Greater New Bedford Choral Society Open Rehearsals Begin September 9th\, 2026
DESCRIPTION:Experience the joy of singing with GNBCS–everyone is welcome–no auditions necessary! Attend an open rehearsal to find out what it’s like to sing with us on Wednesday\, September 9\, 16\, or 23 at 6:30pm. \nGNBCS is a non-audition SATB choir under the direction of Brian Dean Sousa. Open rehearsals on September 9\, 16\, and 23 allow new members to experience singing with GNBCS and decide if they wish to continue. We rehearse Wednesday nights from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm at First Unitarian Church in New Bedford. \nOur holiday concert\, “Christmas Songs from Around the World\,” is planned for Sunday\, December 6th at 3:30 pm. Originally a pagan holiday\, Christmas was adopted by the Romans as the date of Christ’s birth in the 4th century and is now celebrated in more than 160 countries. The GNBCS concert will explore a variety of different musical styles and ideas\, and will include selections from 11 different countries in a multitude of languages! \nGNBCS has been bringing classical choral music to listeners in southeastern Massachusetts since its founding in 1964. We are a four-part chorus with members from surrounding communities including Westport\, Dartmouth\, Acushnet\, Lakeville\, New Bedford\, and Fairhaven. \nWe present one winter concert in either December or January\, and another in the spring. Our concerts typically include one major choral work plus a selection of shorter pieces chosen for the season of the year and are performed in area churches. We have combined with the New Bedford Symphony\, the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Chorus\, and other area choral societies to perform larger works. \nVisit our website at https://www.gnbcs.org/ for more information and to register or follow us on Facebook.

SUMMARY:Author Book Talk: Janna Malamud Smith
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, October 29 | 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM\nFree\, virtual program; registration required \nAbout the Author: Janna Malamud Smith is a writer and psychotherapist. She is the author of five books\, Private Matters: In Defense of the Personal Life (1997) and A Potent Spell: Mother Love and the Power of Fear (2003)\, were chosen as “Notable Books” by The New York Times Sunday Book Review\, My Father is a Book: A Memoir of Bernard Malamud (2006)\, was selected as a Washington Post Best Book of the Year\, and a New York Times Editor’s Choice\, An Absorbing Errand: How Artists and Craftsmen Make Their Way to Mastery\, and When the Island Had Fish: The Remarkable Story of a Maine Fishing Community. Her articles and essays have appeared nationally and internationally in newspapers\, magazines and literary journals including The New York Times\, The Boston Globe\, The International Herald Tribune\, The Christian Science Monitor\, American Scholar\, Family Circle and The Threepenny Review\, and she writes regularly for Cognoscenti\, an opinion website for WBUR a Boston NPR station. She studied American History and Literature in college\, and then pursued a graduate degree in clinical social work. She is mostly retired from clinical practice but still does some clinical consultation. \nAbout the Book: When the Island had Fish is the story of a tiny island\, Vinalhaven Maine\, that offers a close look at the significant history of Maine fishing particularly\, but also offers perspective on the impact of industrialized fishing on small fishing villages all over the United States and the world. Vinalhaven’s documented habitation by fishermen dates back over 5000 years\, and still today lobstering is the primary source of employment for its 1100 year round residents; islanders currently harvest lobsters at a rate almost unrivaled nationally. The book investigates the changing meanings of the notion of a “fishing community” and of community members’ changing relationships with the natural world and with international commerce. Through this broader lens\, it sheds light on the way that species\, including humans\, are impacted by—and at moments contribute to—climate change\, environmental degradation\, and sustainable and unsustainable uses of natural resources. When the Island had Fish also provides a meditation on America’s past and future. Vinalhaven’s fishing history is in every way America’s history. It’s a story of habitations by native peoples and European-American settlers\, their use of natural resources\, their communities and kin\, and their efforts to find ways to live in a harsh environment. Anyone interested in creating a viable collective future will learn from reading about the Penobscot Bay fisheries and fishermen\, and about Vinalhaven’s citizens’ expansive knowledge of craft\, husbandry\, self-governance and community independence\, and interdependence.

SUMMARY:A HALLOWEEN YOGA EXPERIENCE - CHASING AWAY YOUR SHADOW
DESCRIPTION:This Halloween\, instead of running from our shadows\, we invite you to meet them\, with curiosity\, movement\, and awareness. 🌑 \nWe all carry experiences of fear\, uncertainty\, and challenge. But we also carry something else: the strength that helped us move through them.\nThrough mindful movement\, somatic exploration\, breathwork\, and yoga\, this practice invites you to notice how the body holds our experiences and reconnect with the courage\, strength\, and inner resources already within you. \nWe’ll close with a Sensory Awareness Meditation\, resting comfortably on the floor as you’re guided through visualization\, body awareness\, sensation\, and gentle intuitive movement. A space to slow down\, listen inward\, and experience your body in a different way.\nThis isn’t about getting rid of your shadows. \nIt’s about remembering the strength you carry when they appear.\n🌑 Come move.\n🌑 Come feel.\n🌑 Come reconnect.\n🌑 Come reclaim your strength. \nA different kind of Halloween experience\, one that invites you to turn inward rather than run away.
