First Fridays at the New Bedford Whaling Museum: Rhythms of Africa with Sidy Maïga & Afrimanding

The New Bedford Whaling Museum continues its popular First Friday series on May 2, offering an evening of music, culture, and connection in an energetic, adults-only atmosphere.

This special program features acclaimed Malian percussionist Sidy Maïga and his ensemble, Afrimanding, as they take guests on a journey through the rich traditions of West African drumming and the vibrant global rhythms it inspires.

Attendees are invited to explore the Museum’s galleries and exhibitions at 5:00 p.m. before the live performance starts at 6:30 p.m. At 7:30 p.m., a drum circle workshop invites participants to tap into their own rhythm as they learn the basics of djembe drumming. An intimate post performance reception will begin at 8:00 p.m. with Sidy and his ensemble, where he will share stories about his journey as a musician, educator, and cultural ambassador. Guests can sip on cocktails and mocktails from the cash bar while enjoying complimentary light bites throughout the night.

First Fridays at the Whaling Museum provide a one-of-a-kind experience, bringing live music, fine art, and history together in an adults-only (21+) setting. Doors open at 5:00 p.m., with the performance beginning at 6:30 p.m.
